The Sport Sector Keeps Physical Activity Goals in Sight

The COVID-19 outbreak severely impacted sport and leisure activities in 2020, turning daily life upside down. With many sports competitions cancelled or postponed – not least, the Tokyo Olympic Games and Euro 2020 football championship – millions of pounds were lost in revenue. Professional clubs have survived as they are able to rely on broadcasting contracts, but at a public level the pandemic's arrival forced people who enjoy sport as spectators and participants into a situation where they were denied the ability to be outdoors. It seemed the health benefits of sport – physical and mental – were never more obvious than at the moment communities were deprived of it, with freedom severely limited as the United Kingdom attempted to control the spread of the virus.
