Addressing Mental Health Inequalities in Minority Ethnic Groups is a partnership between Leeds Community Foundation and Synergi Leeds. The fund aims to fund Black-led community initiatives to work within their local communities, alongside statutory services, with the goal of reducing the rate at which Black men are detained under the Mental Health Act in Leeds.
Key information
- Activity must support Black men over the age of 18
- Proposed activity must be Black-Led, i.e. must involve Black men as co-designers, peer researchers, and/or staff
- Organisations must provide holistic interventions that look at the whole person, not just their clinical presentation
- Applications must outline plans to build relationships and pathways into crisis and inpatient services
- Applications must outline plans for outcome measurement from the beginning of proposed activity
- Activity should address one of the following:
- Upstream Interventions
- Reducing stigma and increasing trust with services/pathways

Examples of activity that can be funded
You’ll know how best to support Black men in your communities, but activity should meet men where they are comfortable and respond to their individual interests. Activity could include:
- Creative approaches and/or safe, trusted spaces to engage
- Supporting people with gaining access to, and maintaining engagement with, appropriate services
- Capacity-building, e.g. skills building for staff and volunteers, paying for a mental health professional’s time, evaluation, use of new technologies, relationship building with local statutory services
- Providing flexible individual support, combined with peer support, as appropriate
